What Is Compulsive Overeating?

Compulsive overeating is an eating disorder characterized as chronically overeating, or eating excessive amounts of food without any control – usually past the point of being full, even if in discomfort. The reasoning behind why individuals overeat vary, however, it’s usually brought on by a mix of psychological, emotional, and environmental factors. Individuals affected usually binge as a coping mechanism for underlying emotional issues such as anxiety, anger, fear, or depression. Those who compulsively overeat tend to feel shameful, usually eating alone and trying to hide their symptoms.

Compulsive overeating is very similar to binge eating, however, it is usually classified as OSFED since those who suffer from compulsive overeating may not meet the particular requirements to be diagnosed with binge eating. To be diagnosed with binge eating, an individual must binge at least two times a week for multiple months.
