Learn More About Residential Eating Disorder Treatment
A residential program is the most intensive recovery treatment offered at our facility. Our program provides a safe environment where adults 18 and older are able to recover. It includes round-the-clock medical monitoring and support as clients address underlying problems and renew their relationship with food. It is ideal for clients who need round-the-clock care, but no longer need the intensity of medical support provided in inpatient care.
When you receive treatment from Eating Disorder Solutions, you’re able to step away from the daily stresses of everyday life and focus on true healing. You will have the ongoing support and encouragement of knowledgeable, compassionate staff members. We will guide you as you work through your treatment goals and provide full support when challenging times arise.
Many individuals who enter our residential eating disorder treatment have nutrient deficiencies because they don’t eat healthy, balanced meals. Our top priority is to correct these deficiencies and treat other existing medical conditions so that our clients are medically stable and safe. In order to do that, our registered dietitians create meal plans according to their specific nutritional needs. Also, our doctors treat related medical issues on a case-by-case basis.
The duration of our residential eating disorder treatment program depends on how long individuals need to recover. While some clients stay at our facility for only a few weeks, others may require treatment for three months. This flexibility allows us to provide the structure and guidance needed for as long as they need it.
What to Expect During Residential Treatment
When individuals enter residential eating disorder treatment at Eating Disorder Solutions, we perform thorough medical and mental health evaluations. These include lab tests and psychological assessments to ensure that we create optimal treatment plan. At this point, we will diagnose the eating disorder and identify any co-occurring mental disorders.
Part of this process involves our specialists getting to know clients on a personal level. We spend time with each individual to learn about his or her medical and personal histories and expectations. During this assessment, our specialist will ask you about your mental health, goals for treatment, personal strengths and hobbies, and explore your struggles and concerns. All of our assessments are completely confidential and will help our team to develop a customized treatment plan that’s unique to the individual. We also take the time to explain the different levels of eating disorder treatment programs offered at our facility.
After the assessment, if we think that our residential program is a fit for the individual, we begin to integrate individuals into our residential eating disorder treatment schedule. Our program is highly structured to keep individuals focused on recovery without burning them out.

A Typical Day in Our Residential Eating Disorder Treatment Program
It’s normal to feel anxious about starting our residential program. However, Eating Disorder Solutions offers a calm and relaxing environment for clients to heal. We will always walk you through the process and steps, so you know exactly what to expect throughout our eating disorder treatment programs. Here is a typical day at our residential treatment program.
Each day starts at 6:30 a.m. with checking vitals and weight. Then, clients take showers and get dressed before breakfast at 8 a.m. The first group therapy session starts at 9 a.m., and there’s a break afterward before the second group session starts at 11 a.m. In general, therapy sessions last for about one hour, but we may adjust the length depending on individual needs.
Next, lunch is served at 12 p.m. according to individual meal plans, and the third group session starts at 1:45 p.m. A snack break takes place before individual therapy or free time at 3 p.m. At 5 p.m., clients attend a fourth group session before dinner at 6 p.m. After dinner is a fifth group session at 7 p.m. and structured recreational activities at 8 p.m. In keeping with our structured environment, we implement an 11 p.m. curfew for lights out.
Every Saturday, our residential eating disorder treatment program includes recreational outings between lunch and dinner. The trips are based on adherence to facility rules and participation in treatment. Practical outings involve going to the store to buy personal or grocery items. Our self-help outings include religious services, self-help conventions or support group meetings. The fun outings may include going bowling or to the movies, a park or a museum.
In order to create the most comprehensive residential eating disorder treatment possible, Eating Disorder Solutions uses a variety of components. The main ones are therapy sessions and nutrition education that target the individual’s mind, body, and soul. These individualized therapies provide clients with the tools and skills to live abundant lives after treatment.
Individual and Group Therapy Sessions
Our psychiatrists and therapists help individuals gain insight about themselves, build self-esteem and manage co-occurring conditions. Our philosophy for individual therapy is to create individualized strategies that give clients the tools that they need to achieve their recovery goals. Some of the strategies that we use include:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): Provides individuals with the tools to transform negative thoughts into positive ones.
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): Dialectical: Teaches individuals how to live in the moment, cope healthily with stress, regulate emotions and improve relationships with others. This therapy is proven to be effective in working with trauma.
- Acceptance and commitment therapy: Helps individuals accept and cope with everyday stressors and difficulties that come with life.
Throughout the day, each of our specialists oversees a group therapy session. The topics of the meetings change each time, but some of them include: self-care, self-esteem, body image, DBT skills, CBT skills, relapse prevention, relationship building and the consequences of eating disorders.
During residential eating disorder treatment, we use these sessions to motivate individuals in ways that individual counseling cannot. Group therapy is a helpful healing aid because it shows the participants that they aren’t alone. They also have the chance to share their experiences and provide support to each other.
Nutrition Education and Counseling
Our philosophy about nutrition is that incorporating all foods into the diet makes it possible to reconnect to the joy of eating. We believe that every food is good in moderation and that all body types can be healthy. Our registered dietitians empower clients to practice intuitive eating, which involves listening to cues from the body about when and what to eat. We also help get rid of the anxiety and fear that they associate with eating.
There’s more to our residential eating disorder treatment than these main components. For example, we use art and music therapy as holistic approaches to recovery. Equine or pet therapy, spiritual groups and yoga therapy are other examples of our whole-person treatment.
Family therapy is incredibly important for the individual struggling with an eating disorder to heal. A solid support system is key to anyone going through this process as eating disorders affect much more than the individual — they affect the entire family. Our therapists work with each family to seek new understanding of how the client’s problems have affected the family dynamics, and how the family dynamics have affected the resident’s problems. Furthermore, we provide guidance to families on how to support loved ones after treatment.
Other Levels of Eating Disorder Treatment
When individuals complete our residential eating disorder program, they don’t have to return home without our support. In fact, it’s very common for individuals to need ongoing guidance as they adjust to managing their eating disorder on their own. For this reason, Eating Disorder Solutions offers partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP) and standard outpatient programs.
These are step-down programs that include further therapy and nutrition guidance. The biggest difference between them and our residential program is that individuals live at home and visit our facility for therapy throughout the week.
Our PHP involves a structured schedule with five hours of therapy five or six days per week. For the IOP, we provide three hours of therapy three days per week. Our standard outpatient program includes one hour of therapy once or twice a week. We can help individuals determine which level of care will best suit their needs.
Intensive Inpatient Treatment for Severe Cases
As the highest treatment available for eating disorders, an intensive inpatient or hospitalization program is reserved for individuals who have life-threatening complications or suffer from extreme malnutrition. For instance, they might experience blackouts or be severely dehydrated.
At this point, individuals need intensive medical care to stabilize their bodies. This is the primary goal of inpatient treatment. When they reach a stable state, they can transition into a residential program where they receive the therapeutic services necessary to fully recover.
Please note that Eating Disorder Solutions doesn’t offer this level of intense care. However, we’re happy to help individuals get the inpatient eating disorder treatment that they need. Afterward, we welcome them into our residential treatment program to encourage further healing and support long-term recovery.
