October 11th is the 32nd annual National Coming Out Day (NCOD), and we are so excited to celebrate!  As we commemorate this important day, we encourage everyone to participate in national recovery month activities in your area. These events not only promote awareness and support for individuals in recovery but also foster a sense of community and connection. Let’s join together to uplift and empower each other during this meaningful month.

NCOD was created thirty-two years ago, on the anniversary of the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. We celebrate this momentous occasion every year to empower others and to show support to all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Robert Eichberg, one of the founders of NCOD, said in a 1992 interview that “It is imperative that we come out and let people know who we are and disabuse them of their fears and stereotypes.” I think the hope is that the more it is done, the easier it will be for others to do the same. Thus, with more awareness, there won’t be a need to “come out” because you can just feel comfortable simply being you.

The LGBTQ+ community faces challenges in both being afflicted from things that push them towards treatment and facing a world of treatment unable or unwilling to help them with it. We realize that coming out is something best done at your own pace, but we hope that it is something you can feel empowered to do with us at EDS.
