Common Types of Eating Disorders

Eating disorders cover a broad spectrum of mental and physical health conditions that are typically categorized as followed: Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), Binge Eating Disorder (BED), Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), and Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). Many individuals struggling with an eating disorder often fluctuate between the different “categories”. Therefore, Eating Disorder Solution focuses on the individual, not his or her diagnosis, to better understand the underlying cause and best treatment approach for each client.

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa involves an intense fear of gaining weight and/or distorted body image. Anorexia nervosa is associated with restrictive food intake, preoccupation with calories, and compulsive over-exercising.

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa involves an obsessive fear of gaining weight and distorted body image manifesting as binge eating followed by self-induced vomiting, over-exercising, or fasting. This cycle causes immense guilt and shame.

Binge Eating Disorders

Binge eating is characterized by eating large amounts of food over short periods of time with a feeling of loss of control. It is not associated with compensatory behaviors like Bulimia Nervosa.

Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder

ARFID involves restricting food intake based on texture, smell, brand, and past negative experiences causing avoidance of many foods and/or food groups resulting in malnutrition and other health concerns.
