What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Eating Disorders?
Eating disorders affect millions of individuals across the United States every year. However, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, less than half of them get the treatment that they need. Eating Disorder Solutions, aims to change that by offering a continuum of care that includes a partial hospitalization (PHP) eating disorder treatment program.
Our specialists understand the importance of addressing untreated eating disorders and aim to promote ongoing emotional and physical healing. We design our comprehensive services to provide personalized care for individuals with all types of eating disorders including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating, and OSFED.
What is PHP Like at Eating Disorder Solutions?
We want to make our partial hospitalization eating disorder treatment program accessible to as many individuals as possible. As part of that objective, we accept more than 80 insurance plans from major insurers and offer financing options. For those who do not have insurance, we have flexible payment plans that are tailored to fit your budget. The result is affordable but effective care that empowers individuals to maintain their recovery.
As part of a larger treatment process, our partial hospitalization eating disorder program is designed to provide continued care as our clients adjust to living at home after completing our residential eating disorder treatment program. Our facility provides a comfortable, safe place for them to regain control and address underlying issues. When they return home, it may be difficult to adjust to everyday stressors unless they have the right level of support.
PHP provides the guidance that individuals need while still giving them freedom to adjust to living without an eating disorder in their own ways. Essentially, it’s a highly structured program that doesn’t provide supervision 24 hours per day. In some cases, however, it’s a suitable starting point for eating disorder treatment.

What Are The Components of Our Partial Hospitalization Eating Disorder Program?
At Eating Disorder Solutions, we aim to change individuals’ lives by helping them address underlying conditions and teaching them coping skills during our eating disorder PHP. Our medical doctors, psychiatrists, therapists and registered dietitians work with each client to develop a holistic treatment plan that achieves these objectives and personal goals for recovery. Each partial hospitalization eating disorder treatment plan will include medical assessments, a variety of therapy sessions and nutrition education.
How is The Eating Disorder Medical Assessments & Diagnosis Performed?
In order to provide the best therapy and nutritional guidance, individuals undergo confidential medical and psychiatric evaluations to determine the level of care that is appropriate for their needs. Upon arriving at our facility, our partial hospitalization program for eating disorders includes physical exams and blood work. For instance, we perform urine, gastrointestinal, liver and kidney tests to determine whether individuals need specialized care. Our psychologists will ask a variety of questions to get to know the client on an individual basis and to identify any co-occurring disorders.
Our premier team uses a variety of counseling techniques in individual, group and family sessions to help clients learn about themselves, manage underlying issues, build self-esteem and develop life skills. Some of these techniques include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy.

These issues might be mental health disorders or untreated trauma.
What is Group Therapy?
- Self-esteem
- Body image
- Setting boundaries
- Mindful eating
- Nutrition education
- Stress management
- Meal planning
- Medication management
All group therapy sessions are supervised and guided by an experienced eating disorder recovery specialist. Our trauma-informed approach to therapy creates a safe space for exploring the roots of disordered eating and related mental health disorders.
What is Family Counseling?
It’s vital for our clients to have a support system as they go through their journey to recovery. In many cases, not only does the individual going through the treatment process need to heal, but the family needs help coping as well. As part of our partial hospitalization program (PHP), clients’ families can join us for daily private sessions and weekly multi-family sessions. Their close friends and partners may also join them in understanding eating disorders so that they can better support their loved ones in recovery. If necessary our therapists can help them resolve conflicts and rebuild their relationships as well.
What is Nutrition Counseling and Education?
Learning about nutrition and how to eat a healthy, balanced diet is another essential part of our partial hospitalization treatment program. Our registered dietitians teach individuals about the importance of eating certain foods in order to give their bodies the nutrients that they require to function correctly. With guidance, clients learn how to reintroduce foods in a healthy way and gain a better relationship with food so that they enjoy eating again. Our nutritionists guide clients through:
- Intuitive eating and recognizing hunger cues
- Eliminating anxiety and fear of eating certain foods
- Menu planning and buying groceries
- Making healthier food choices while dining out
For the best chance of recovery, our on-site nutritionists will tailor the nutritional therapy to each individual’s needs.

Real People, Real Results
How Does Partial Hospitalization Differ from Residential Eating Disorder Treatment?
The main difference between PHP and residential treatment is individuals do not live at the treatment center. Instead, they are able to take the things they are learning during the day and apply them at night outside of our center. Clients receive much of the same structure as residential care, but PHP eases the transition to life outside the treatment program.
Why Is PHP Considered a Higher Level of Care Than IOP?
PHP involves more treatment hours per week and greater structure than IOP. It is designed for individuals who need daily accountability and monitoring.
Who Is a Good Fit for PHP?
PHP is appropriate for individuals who require structured daily care but do not need overnight supervision. A clinical assessment determines readiness.
Can I Start Treatment at the PHP Level?
Yes, if clinically appropriate. Admissions staff evaluate safety, behaviors, and medical needs to determine placement.
What Does a Typical Day in PHP Include?
PHP typically includes therapy groups, individual sessions, nutritional counseling, and supported meals. Days are structured to promote skill-building and accountability.
How Can I Learn More About PHP Options?
You can speak confidentially with admissions to determine whether PHP is appropriate.
Do I Need a Referral to Begin PHP?
No referral is required. Admissions can schedule an assessment directly.
